The Chatillon-DeMenil House Foundation Historical Benton Park Neighborhood
|
Across the hall, facing south-east is the drawing room. This actually was the "withdrawing" room for ladies to socialize in after dinner, while the men sat in the dining room smoking cigars and discussing politics. Dr. DeMenil used the room as a library as well, and his bookcases lined the room from floor to ceiling. The 12-foot-high ceiling has hand-painted Stenciling around the chandelier and cornices, copied from the original decorated ceiling. The furnishings in the room reflect the late 19th century style with a French salon suite, c. 1861, and a black walnut what-not shelf with Victorian decorative pieces. The hand-tied wool Savonnerie carpet was made for the restoration in Spain, and reflects the colors and designs of the ceiling. |
