A Death in the Family
"A Death in the Family" a Victorian Mourning
Interpretation
The
Chatillon-DeMenil House will once again be shrouded in a state of
Victorian mourning for the month of October, and on Sunday, October
17, 2010 from 12-5pm we will host our 6th annual "A Death in the
Family" event.
The House will appear as it would in 1860 and a
family member had just "passed on". Every room of the House will
feature some aspect of how Victorians dealt with death and grieving,
from illness to burial, including mourning clothing and hair
jewelry.
The Victorian spiritualism movement will also be
explored. There will be tarot card readers available to give you a
personal reading. There will also be a re-enactment of a séance to
show how Victorians attempted to contact "the other side."

Then fast forward to the 21st century as members of
the group PRISM (Paranormal Research & Investigative Studies
Midwest) will demonstrate the use of voice recordings and video
cameras to show how we still try to contact "the other side" today.
The Cafe DeMenil will be open for lunch on that day
from 11am-2:30pm. So come enjoy lunch with us and stay to mourn with
us on Sunday, October 17th.
